How this card plays

7 reviews

The whole card is a dare to read other people's graveyards. The combat-damage trigger steals from the player you hit, returning that creature tapped and attacking back at them, which makes this a ninjas-and-aggression engine that scales with how full the table's bins are. The natural home is Yuriko, the Tiger's Shadow, where the Sneak cost approximates a ninjutsu drop, the first strike protects the connect, and the reanimated body becoming an attacker against its owner doubles as a clock. Marrow-Gnawer and other unblockable-aggression black decks want the trigger too, but Yuriko is the cleanest fit: the deck already wants to be hitting players and already values evasion over board presence.

This is a Bracket 3 card and an awkward one below that. In precon-tier play, opponents' graveyards are too shallow for the trigger to reliably pay off, and the body is just a fair 4/4. It needs a pod with real creature decks across the table to do anything, a Bracket 2-3 expectation rather than a Bracket 1 one. cEDH does not want it either, but not because it is slow: Sneak gives it an evasive arrival window. The problem is that its payoff still hinges on connecting in combat, and cEDH games rarely grant the unmolested attack step this needs. The competitive black slots go to tutors and fast mana.

Within a Yuriko shell it competes for the saboteur slot against Mistblade Shinobi or Skullsnatcher, and it loses on consistency (the trigger needs a worthwhile graveyard) while winning on ceiling (a stolen bomb attacking its owner is a swing nothing else at this cost matches). The political read matters: whoever's bin looks best becomes the target, and the table will haggle over who gets shredded first. Invisible at tables full of low-creature decks, which is the real ceiling on its inclusion.
