How this card plays

7 reviews

The name-matching reanimation clause is doing all the work here, and it points the build in one direction: rat tribal as a self-funding reanimation engine. The token side feeds the activation, the activation rebuilds the board, and Disappear forces you to keep the cycle turning. Relentless Rats and Rat Colony stop being filler and become the payload, because sacrificing three rats to return one and "all other cards with the same name" can drag four or five copies back at once. That is the build-around pivot, and it is genuinely novel for black recursion.

As your own commander, this is a Bracket 2-3 home for a dedicated rat deck. It does not displace Marrow-Gnawer as the rat aggro general; Marrow-Gnawer floods faster and swings harder, while Rat King wants the slower attrition plan where you bleed permanents on purpose and grind the graveyard. The two read as different decks wearing the same creature type. In the 99, Rat King is narrower still. A few mono-black sacrifice lists could run it, but Yawgmoth, Thran Physician and the Endrek Sahr token-and-feed shells already have better sacrifice payoffs and rarely lean on name-matched recursion.

Budget tier is friendly: the deck's core is cheap commons, and the commander itself should sit at sub-$5. There is a real overlap with mill, though it runs through the reanimation clause rather than shared cards: Persistent Petitioners are Human Advisors, not Rats, but a rat-heavy graveyard can still buy them back en masse, so a self-milling shell can lean on Rat King to rebuild a Petitioner army for the alternate win. The card is invisible outside rat tribal, which is most of the table. This is not a value engine you splash; it is the spine of one specific, deliberately repetitive deck, and it only pays off if you commit to the swarm the singleton rule usually tells you to avoid.
