How this card plays

7 reviews

The combat-routed reanimation is the whole pitch here, and it points at a narrow set of homes. The deck wants creatures it is happy to attack with unblocked, an Orzhov graveyard worth raiding, and a reason to favor combat-step recursion over the sorcery-speed kind. As a commander, Karai, Future of the Foot reads as a midrange aristocrats-adjacent build: connect, pull a creature back, repeat the hand-return each combat. The Sneak mode matters most when she is in the command zone, because the 2 generic manaWhite manaBlack mana Sneak cost is a premium over her 1 generic manaWhite manaBlack mana base, not a discount. You pay the extra mana to skip a turn of setup, dropping her in tapped and attacking so that the first connection puts a creature card straight onto the battlefield. That battlefield return is a one-time payoff tied to the turn Sneak was paid; on every subsequent attack she returns the creature to hand, which is the fair-rate mode the design settles into.

In the 99, she is a real consideration in a recursion-focused Teysa Karlov build, where extra death triggers and graveyard loops give her returns somewhere to go. Even there she competes with cleaner engines: Reveillark, Karmic Guide, and the Orzhov reanimation suite that does not ask you to land combat damage first. Karai's tax is that she has to connect, and in a four-player game an unblocked attacker is a negotiated outcome as much as a board-state one. Resolving her draws less heat than a sorcery-speed Reanimate landing a bomb, which is part of the appeal.

This is a Bracket 2-3 card, too combat-contingent for cEDH and too build-specific for precon. Expect a sub-$10 secondary price as a newer legend. Outside that combat-plus-graveyard overlap, she does nothing.

Sneak 2 generic manaWhite manaBlack mana (You may cast this spell for 2 generic manaWhite manaBlack mana if you also return an unblocked attacker you control to hand during the declare blockers step. She enters tapped and attacking.) Whenever Karai deals combat damage to a player, return target creature card from your graveyard to your hand. If her sneak cost was paid this turn, instead return that card to the battlefield.
