A medium-speed format that grinds life totals down rather than racing them is the right home for a one-mana drain, and the pick band lands at P1P5 to P1P8 in any base-black deck, sliding earlier in WB or BG where the food tokens (Anchovy & Banana Pizza, Omni-Cheese Pizza) want a density of small triggers that add up to something real.

The flying is the part that earns the pick. The format's common ground stat lines top out at 2/3s and 3/2s, which means an evasive one-drop is a clock those bodies cannot answer in combat. That changes what the drain is worth: it starts as a single point on entry, but a flier that keeps connecting turns that one point into a recurring tax the opponent has no clean blocker for. The 1/1 does die to everything in range, so don't expect it to survive a removal spell. Stomped by the Foot, Grounded for Life, and an aura like Dimensional Exile all clear it. But spending one of those on a one-drop is a trade most black drafters are happy to force, and the entry value is already banked.

Where the card sharpens is as the cheapest equipment carrier in the format. Strap Novel Nunchaku to it and the evasion that ground decks already can't address becomes a genuine clock. WB and BG are the homes; mono-black-with-a-splash maindecks one without complaint. The failure case is the deck that wants the body to grind on the ground with no payoff attached, where the scry never compounds into a sacrifice or lifegain plan. Two is the ceiling before the chassis turns redundant.

A one-mana black flier whose enter trigger drains for one, gains a point back, and scrys: a repeatable enter-trigger for blink and reanimator shells that care about the flicker rather than the body. The evasion and the scry are what those decks keep, smoothing draws every time the creature returns. It does not sit at the top of the recursion priority list, where you would rather flicker something that draws cards or moves the board, but the single black mana is what keeps it on the table: at one, it slots into a flicker package as the cheap trigger that fills out the curve below your heavier targets.

The nearest slot is the sacrifice-fodder one-drop in Yawgmoth Combo, the format's real home for incremental drain. That deck wants bodies that pay you twice, once on entry and again when they die into Yawgmoth, Thran Physician's activations. The incumbents are the persist creatures: Young Wolf and Strangleroot Geist, which come back the moment they hit the yard and turn each Yawgmoth activation into a loop. Dream Beavers pays once, on entry, with a one-point drain and a scry. The 1/1 flier is small enough to feed a sacrifice outlet, but it generates nothing on the way out, and Yawgmoth's plan is built on undying bodies and the Yawgmoth engine itself, not on evasion or a single drain trigger. The flying and the scry are wasted text in that shell. A downgrade against the persist package, plainly.

No second deck carries a better case. Black blink and reanimator strategies that might cannibalize an enter trigger are not reaching for a one-mana one-point drain when Modern's clock outruns the value this assembles, and the scry that smooths black aggro's draws does not buy enough in a format that closes games on turn three or four.

Legal, but it has not shown up in tracked tournament Modern this season, and the structural read explains the absence. The compressed package is genuine: drain, scry, evasion at one black mana is a tighter rate than it looks. But the numbers are Limited numbers in a constructed format where Yawgmoth wins on persist loops and the aggressive black decks want bodies that close, not bodies that ping. The chassis is real; the slot is occupied by creatures that do more.

It is a build-around that very few black lists actually build around right now, so it sits at the margins of the format rather than across it.

A black one-drop flier with a drain-and-scry trigger, filling the evasive-utility slot that black aggro and aristocrats lists have always kept open. The package is real enough that the Tier-1 read treats it as a build-around candidate, but Pioneer's sacrifice and blink shells already run deeper one-drops, and the format currently registers this one only as a single copy in the occasional brew. It goes in budget black builds short on better entry triggers, or as a one-of in a list testing the drain-and-scry chassis. Cut it once a tuned shell finds its priority one-drops.

A one-mana 1/1 flier that drains for one and scrys one, in a format where Black Lotus makes three mana on turn zero and Ancestral Recall draws three for a single black-equivalent investment. The drain is a point; Vintage measures life pressure against turn-one kills and storm counts, not chip damage. The scry is real card selection, but it is the floor of what the format asks from a one-drop, and it pays Mental Misstep on the way in. Nothing here pressures the restricted list. Legal, but yet to register in tracked tournament play.

The bar for a black one-drop in Legacy is set by what the format's aggressive black decks actually run: Deathrite Shaman as a mana engine and graveyard hate that also chips life, or in the wider one-mana slot, Dragon's Rage Channeler as a three-power threat that fuels itself. A 1/1 flier that drains a point from each opponent, gains you one, and scrys is a value blip with evasion, not a clock. The drain matters less than the rate suggests; one point each way is not pressure in a format where decks goldfish on turn one.

The flying does buy it relevance as a blocker against other small fliers, and the scry papers over a draw, but Ponder and Brainstorm handle selection at the same mana without committing a body to the board. If the trigger is the appeal, that is an aristocrats and blink consideration, and those decks live in Modern and Commander, not Legacy.

Legal, but yet to register in tracked Legacy play this season. The bar is high, and this falls short of it.
