How this card plays

7 reviews

The token-or-land sacrifice is the whole pitch, and it sorts cleanly into two homes. The first is tokens-matter green decks that already flood the board with bodies they do not mind eating. Ghave, Guru of Spores wants this as a fodder sink that pays back: feed it a token on entry or attack, gain the life, and at your end step the draw fires off the permanent that left. Ghave is already in the business of making expendable creatures, so the loop costs nothing real. The second and more interesting fit is landfall and lands-matter shells like Omnath, Locus of Creation or a heavy-ramp Azusa, Lost but Seeking, where a flooded mana base is genuine and a seven-drop that turns excess lands into life and cards is closing from a board that would otherwise be inert.

This is a Bracket 2-3 card. Seven mana for a 7/7 that needs supporting fodder is too slow for cEDH and too synergy-dependent for a precon to run well, but in optimized casual it is a clean curve-topper with built-in card advantage. Recently printed, so the secondary price is unsettled; green finishers of this rate historically land in the sub-$5 to $5-15 range.

The deck role is the top of the curve, not the engine. In Ghave it competes with other token payoffs for the finisher slot and wins when the deck wants a draw welded to the body rather than a pure go-wide threat. Trample carries the threat assessment: a 7/7 you cannot chump while it draws a card per turn it survives buys the table nothing by blocking. That tends to make it the second or third thing answered rather than the first, which is exactly where a value engine wants to sit. Outside green token and lands shells, it has no home.
