The tax on greed, payable on demand. Strip Mine got there first and shares the exact same body: tap for colorless, or sacrifice to blow up a land. The difference is one word. Strip Mine destroys any target land; this one is restricted to nonbasics, and that restriction is the entire reason the card stayed printable while remaining a defining piece of land destruction. Basics are immune, which means the decks that lean on them are precisely the ones it cannot touch, and the decks that reach for dual lands, fetchable utility lands, and color-hungry manabases are the ones it punishes. The structural elegance is that the destruction lives inside a sacrifice cost: the land sits in play producing colorless mana, indistinguishable from a slightly worse basic, until the moment a nonbasic becomes the thing standing between an opponent and a win. Because that sacrifice is a one-shot, every activation is a genuine resource trade rather than a recurring lock. The reason it has never lost its edge is that the game's power curve keeps printing better nonbasics, and every one of them is a fresh target the instant it hits the table. Land destruction is among the least popular things a card can do, but this is the version players accept, because the cost it imposes is paid by the player who chose to play greedy.
