Turtle Blimp

Five mana for a 3/4 flier plus a 2/2 ground body is a rate the format's removal map cannot punish efficiently. Stomped by the Foot and Bot Bashing Time take out one half and leave the other standing. Grounded for Life destroys the Blimp outright but still leaves the Mutant, turning a clean answer into a one-for-one against a two-card package. Dimensional Exile is the only common that removes the Vehicle without conceding the token. That asymmetry is the entire reason to value this above its sticker price.

The Mutant matters most to RW Equipment, which gets a fresh body for Bespoke Bō or Novel Nunchaku the turn the Blimp lands, the rare five-drop that advances an equipment plan instead of clogging the curve. BG Food wants the token for a different reason: as sacrifice fodder while the flier closes, with the deck never spending a separate creature to crew. UR Sneak is the cold seat. The flier is fine there, but turn five wants to be a tempo trigger, not a static board commitment.

P1P5 to P1P7 in any non-blue deck without a settled five-drop, climbing toward P1P4 in RW or BG once the equipment or sacrifice payoffs are visible. Maindeck in those colors. The format's flying commons sit at two toughness and cannot race a 3/4 in the air, so the matchups that want the Blimp lowest are the ground-stall draws where the Mutant blocks poorly and the air is already contested.

A five-mana flier for a Commander deck that wants a self-sufficient body and has run out of stronger five-drops. Seven points of stats split across a 3/4 flier and a 2/2 token is fine value, but Commander asks five-drops to win games, not assemble fair boards. There is no Vehicle archetype in the singleton format that needs this, and the crew-itself design that sells it in a precon stops mattering when you can run actual fliers or actual ramp instead. Comes in the box; cut on the first build pass.

A five-mana flier that ships its own pilot is a clean design and an irrelevant one in Modern. The format does not run a five-mana Vehicle slot in any tournament deck, and the closest comparison points sit several power levels above what Turtle Blimp offers. Seven stats across two bodies for five mana is a fine rate in a precon and roughly two mana too slow for a format where Murktide Regent is delving down to one or two mana and Boros Energy is closing games on turn four with Ragavan and Guide of Souls.

There is no incumbent to displace because there is no slot to contest. A 3/4 flier with a 2/2 attached is not competing with anything Modern decks currently run at five mana; the decks that reach five mana in this format (Amulet Titan, the various Tron builds) are casting Primeval Titan or Karn, the Great Creator, payoffs that win the game rather than develop a board. Turtle Blimp develops a board, and a modest one.

Legal, but yet to register in tracked tournament play this season, and the structural read says that will not change. The card asks for a midrange Vehicle shell that does not exist in competitive Modern, and the rate it offers would not earn a slot in one if it did. No active home here.

A five-mana flier for a Standard midrange shell that wants an evil air threat and a body left over when it eats removal. Self-crewing solves the usual Vehicle problem, but five mana for a 3/4 flier plus a 2/2 is a rate Standard's better top-ends clear without leaving a Mutant behind to bargain over. Legal, but it has yet to register in tracked tournament play this season, and there is no archetype asking for it. This is precon material that wants something to happen the turn it lands.

A five-mana colorless Vehicle that brings its own pilot is a clean idea, but it is legal in Pioneer without being registered in any tracked tournament list so far. The structural reason is not subtle. Five mana for seven points of stats split across a 3/4 flier and a 2/2 token is a Limited rate, and Pioneer's colorless five-drops are measured against the actual top of the format's curves: the planeswalkers and the value engines that win the game on the turn they resolve. Turtle Blimp does not win the game; it adds bodies.

There is no archetype asking for it. Pioneer's artifact-aggregate decks, when they exist, want cheap permanents that feed a payoff, not a five-mana standalone. The Vehicle decks the format has supported run cheaper, harder-hitting hulls with a creature base already built to crew, and they do not need a Vehicle that crews itself when crewing was never their problem. Mono-Green Devotion and the various midrange piles have far better uses for a five-mana slot.

The self-crewing design solves a deckbuilding friction that competitive Pioneer lists have already engineered around. A precon card built to be forgiving runs into a format where the relevant five-drops are unforgiving. No slot competition to name here, because there is no slot: the deck that would want a colorless, resilient, evasive five-mana body at this rate is not part of the current map.

A five-mana Vehicle in a format where Black Lotus makes three mana on turn zero and Ancestral Recall draws three for one. Seven stats across two bodies is a Limited rate, and Vintage measures every five-drop against Tinker into Blightsteel Colossus, not against fair creatures. Nothing here engages the Power Nine math. Legal, but yet to register in tracked tournament play.

A five-mana 3/4 flier in a format where the most-played threats arrive on turn one for one mana: Delver of Secrets, Dragon's Rage Channeler, Murktide Regent. Even the token does not save it. Seven stats split across two bodies for five is fine in a precon and irrelevant against Force of Will, which counters it for free, or Swords to Plowshares, which exiles the flier for one. Legacy threats end games by turn three or four; this one starts working the turn you spend five mana. Legal, but yet to register in tracked tournament play. Does not clear the bar.
