Their Name Is Death

Sorcery3 generic manaBlack manaBlack manaBlack mana

The five-mana Wrath of God has been black's for a long time; this is the six-mana version that leaves the artifacts standing. The extra black pip and the higher price are what separate it from Damnation: where that card was a clean color-swap of the white template, this one carves out an exception, and the exception is the whole point. Sweeping every nonartifact creature while your Servitor tokens, mana rocks, and artifact-creature engines survive is a board wipe that reads as asymmetry more than reset. That is a distinctly black way to price the effect: pay a mana more, tint the cost triple-black, and get a wrath that rewards a deck built to leave something behind. The design lineage runs through every one-sided sweeper black has flirted with, but most of those asked you to name a creature type or dodge on toughness. Sorting survivors by card type instead is both easier to build around and harder to hedge against, since your opponents rarely get to choose whether their threats are artifacts. It is a heavy, top-of-curve answer that trades efficiency for the guarantee that your own artifact backbone walks away clean.
