The Nipton Lottery

Sorcery2 generic manaBlack manaRed mana

Randomness is the mechanic Magic almost never lets carry a board wipe, because a wrath you cannot aim is a design liability: too swingy to price fairly, too unpredictable to build around. This one leans all the way into that discomfort. It picks the surviving creature for you, hands it over for the turn with haste and an untap, and then clears everything else off the table. You do not get to choose the winner of the lottery; you only get to say that one will be spared, and that it will swing this turn. That structure makes the card a coin-flip Insurrection-in-miniature crossed with a Damnation: the board is going to be reduced to a single hasty attacker most of the time, and the only question is whose creature draws the lucky ticket. The tension is deliberate and total. In a mirror of empty boards it does nothing; in a stalemate of many creatures it becomes a genuine gamble where the biggest threat on the table is as likely to be spared as the smallest token. It is a wrath that refuses to be a safety valve, a theft spell that refuses to promise a target, and a design that treats variance not as a flaw to be sanded down but as the entire point of the ritual.
