Stomped by the Foot

Two mana for -2/-2 is a price the format will pay, but only because the kicked rate solves a problem TMT actually creates. The legendary uncommons and mythic Turtle finishers sit at four and five toughness, often with trample or menace, and the common removal suite is thin enough that any deck reaching turn six against a resolved Shredder, Unrelenting needs a real answer. -5/-5 is that answer, and it lands at instant speed on the swing. Grounded for Life wants the creature tapped first; Dimensional Exile costs an enchantment slot and announces itself a turn early.

BG Food wants it most and should take it P1P3 to P1P5. Anchovy & Banana Pizza and Omni-Cheese Pizza both produce sacrificial fodder that converts the floor upward at no real cost, and the deck is already building the artifact density to make the kicker close to free. WB legendaries values it on a similar band, with a cleaner wrinkle: sacrificing a legendary creature you have already extracted value from is the most efficient version of this trade. The two black archetypes compete for it from opposite directions, one feeding the kicker with disposable tokens, the other with bodies that have outlived their purpose.

The floor is the discipline. In a format where a 2/3 for three is the common baseline, paying two for -2/-2 without the kicker is a losing exchange against anything but the smallest aggressive curves. That weak floor is exactly why the kicked rate is fair, and why this is a maindeck removal spell the moment you are in black, never a card the rest of the table reaches for.

Single-target removal for any black Commander deck, the kind of one-creature answer that sits near the bottom of the cut list once the priority picks are in. The -2/-2 floor is below the curve for a format full of large bodies, but the sacrifice kicker is close to free in a deck already producing Treasures, tokens, or expendable creatures, and the -5/-5 it buys handles most of what such decks need dead. The catch is the ceiling: -5/-5 still whiffs on anything past five toughness, where a clean destroy effect like Hero's Downfall would not. A token or Treasure shell can run it as a second-string answer; most other black decks reach for unconditional removal first and cut this on the next pass.

The 2-mana spot removal slot in Modern black decks is contested ground, and the incumbents are unforgiving. Fatal Push handles most of the format's early threats for one mana with revolt enabled, and Fatal Push is the reason this slot is already settled in Rakdos Scam and the various Murktide-adjacent black shells. Against Push, the comparison turns on what the -2/-2 floor buys you over Push's converted-mana ceiling, and the answer in current Modern is not much: most of the creatures you need to kill (Ragavan, Goblin Guide, the Scam package's Grief and Fury) die to Push without paying anything extra, while the -2/-2 floor here whiffs on anything with three toughness until you find a sacrifice.

The sacrifice-kicker is the whole pitch, and it asks for a board state Modern's black decks do not maintain. The format does not have a tournament-viable aristocrats shell generating disposable Treasures and Blood tokens at the volume that would make the -5/-5 routine. Rakdos Scam wants its creatures evoked and reanimated, not fed to a removal spell. The decks that would happily pay the kicker (token-flood, Treasure-grinder builds) are not competing in Modern.

So the floor is too weak and the ceiling asks for a deck that does not exist in the format. Legal, but yet to register in tracked tournament play this season, and the structural read explains why: every black deck that wants 2-mana removal already runs the spell that does it better without a board commitment. A downgrade against Fatal Push in every deck currently running Push, and the alternative shell it wants is not on the table.

The two-mana removal slot in black Standard decks that already field disposable permanents: a Treasure shell, a token board, something with chaff to feed the kicker. The floor of -2/-2 for two mana is below the rate Standard expects, so this only justifies itself when you can reliably pay the sacrifice and reach -5/-5. Most black decks would rather run removal that kills on its own without committing a second resource. Legal, but yet to register in tracked tournament play this season. Plays where a deck is already sacrificing things anyway, cut otherwise.

Released this season, this has not registered in tracked Pioneer tournament play. It is legal and unplayed, and the reason is structural rather than a quirk of timing.

The sacrifice-kicker design wants a deck that produces disposable permanents as a byproduct: Treasures, tokens, bodies marked for the graveyard. Pioneer's black removal slots are already settled, and the floor here is the problem. Two mana for -2/-2 is below the rate the format expects from its interaction. Rakdos Midrange runs Bloodtithe Harvester, Cut Down, and Fatal Push at one and two mana, all of which kill more for less while asking nothing of your board. Mono-Black Aggro is not in the business of sacrificing its own threats to upgrade a removal spell. The closest fit on paper is Mardu Greasefang, which spends artifacts and creatures freely, but that deck plays removal that protects its combo turn rather than removal that competes with it for resources, and it has no room for a -5/-5 that costs a permanent it would rather be reanimating.

The card needs an aristocrats shell built around cheap fodder, and Pioneer does not have one in its current top tables. Until a black deck appears that wants to convert spent permanents into removal at instant speed, the kicked rate has nowhere to land. The floor is too weak to run unkicked, and the decks that could pay the kicker reliably do not exist in the format. No active slot conversation, no archetype to host it.

Cheap black removal in Pauper is a crowded slot. Disfigure does -2/-2 for one mana at instant speed; Snuff Out kills outright and can be free with a Swamp; Cast Down and Chainer's Edict cover the bigger bodies. Against that field, the floor here is a flat downgrade: two mana for the same -2/-2 Disfigure offers for one. The kicker is the entire pitch, and the kicker asks for a sacrifice rather than mana.

That cost is the problem. MBC, the format's premier black deck, does not generate disposable artifacts or expendable creatures the way an aristocrats shell would; it leans on Chittering Rats, Gray Merchant of Asphodel, and a removal suite that wants to be cheap and unconditional. Paying a card's worth of board to reach -5/-5 is a poor trade in a deck that already runs Snuff Out and Cast Down for that ceiling at no such cost. The format does not currently field a black sacrifice archetype with enough free fodder to make the kicked rate routine, and the unkicked rate is below the bar MBC already clears.

Legal, but yet to register in tracked tournament play this season. The slot it wants is held by cheaper, cleaner commons, and the engine that would justify the kicker does not exist in the current meta. Under a tix on MTGO, and not played at any price.

Two mana for -2/-2, or a sacrifice for -5/-5, in a format where the removal that matters is free or close to it. Vintage's interaction tier is built around Force of Will and Mental Misstep answering threats for no mana, and even the paid removal runs cheaper and broader than a creature-only -5/-5 that needs a second resource to get there. The kicker rewards a token-and-sacrifice board state Vintage does not build around. Legal, but yet to register in tracked tournament play. Noise.

The bar for two-mana removal in Legacy is not a removal spell at all; it is Lightning Bolt and Swords to Plowshares at one mana, both of which kill more for less. Even the floor here, two mana for -2/-2, sits below those, and the spell pays Daze on the way in. The kicked -5/-5 mode is real, but it asks you to sacrifice a permanent on top of two mana to do what Bolt does for one. Legacy's black decks already run Fatal Push and Snuff Out before they would consider this. Legal, but yet to register in tracked tournament play. Does not clear the bar.
