How this card plays

8 reviews

A one-mana 1/1 deathtoucher is legal this season but has yet to register in tracked tournament play, and the reason is the same reason the body has always been a commodity: the rate is fine, but fine is not what wins a slot in a fast format. Standard's aggressive decks do not give you the kind of turn where a vanilla ground-gater earns its keep, and the deathtouch ceiling tops out at trading down with one attacker. The typal line that distinguishes it from Typhoid Rats and Vampire of the Dire Moon is the only argument for registering it over those alternatives, and that argument needs a deck. Squirrel payoffs and Mutant payoffs do not currently share a viable shell in this format; without that bridge to cross, the second creature type is a curiosity, not a reason. As a pure deathtouch one-drop, it competes with cards that do the same job and bring a body or a clause attached, and it loses that competition on flexibility.

It rotates in the fall 2027 cycle with its parent block, exact date pending Wizards' announcement. Nothing on the announced schedule builds the Squirrel-into-Mutant payoff structure that would justify the type line over the cheaper interchangeable options, so the realistic path runs through a future printing rather than the current pool. Until a payoff prints that cares about both halves of Squirrel Mutant at once, this stays a deck-building footnote rather than a registered card.
