Four months into legality, this remains a fringe presence in tracked Standard: a handful of lists running it as a two- or three-of, with no archetype having claimed it as a core engine. The structural reason is the one the card's design invites. The Sneak rebate only pays out if you are already attacking with an unblocked creature and willing to bounce it, which means the card wants an aggressive evasive shell, but the aggressive shells in current Standard are not the ones shopping for a four-mana sorcery-speed tutor. They want their fourth turn spent on pressure, not on a setup spell whose discounted mode costs them a body in combat. The grindy black midrange decks that historically bought tutors at this rate would happily pay full price, but they have no reliable evasive attacker to feed the Sneak cost, so they are paying four mana for an unconditional tutor, and at that rate the format has cheaper ways to find what it needs. The card sits between two archetypes without satisfying either, which is why it shows up in small numbers without converting anywhere.

Splinter's Technique released in March 2026, which puts it in the rotation cycle scheduled for fall 2027, exact date pending Wizards' announcement. That is a long runway by Standard's standards, and the more relevant clock is the format around it rather than the card's own expiry. Nothing on the announced schedule pairs it with the cheap evasive attackers it wants, so its home, if it gets one, depends on a printing that has not been revealed yet.
