Free spells have always paid for themselves in the abstract: cast Ancestral Vision off suspend, pitch a card to Force of Negation, drop a Simian Spirit Guide's worth of green off Nettle Sentinel synergy and never touch your pool. This punishes exactly that behavior at the point of the crime. The 5-damage clause keys off whether any mana was spent, not off the spell's converted cost, which turns the whole family of alternative-cost and free casts into a self-inflicted burn spell rather than a clean ride. The distinction matters: a ritual like Dark Ritual still costs mana to cast, so it walks past the clause untouched. What gets caught is the genuinely free spell, the pitch cast and the mana-value-zero storm piece, and against decks built on that engine, casting the spell they wanted to cast for free becomes the thing that kills them.

The upkeep pinger is the tax that makes it a clock rather than a fringe hate piece; it damages its own controller too, so it is not a durdle enchantment you leave on the table indefinitely. That symmetry is the friction it accepts in exchange for being a proactive threat instead of a reactive one, and it means it wants a deck that closes before the ticks matter. The lifegain-shutoff mode rounds it out against the incidental life a control deck leans on to survive the burn plan. The three abilities share one thesis: opponents who cheat around the resource system, and every route out taxed at once.
