P1P1 in any green seat, and the card that sorts your draft into BG Food, a base-green goodstuff deck, or the Sultai artifact lean if the tokens find downstream payoffs. The X-for-tokens loop reads like a constructed engine, but it lands here because of timing: the Mutagen tokens enter with no summoning sickness, and the legend zeroes their activation cost, so the whole batch cracks the moment the trigger resolves. Cast for an X of four at six total mana and that's four counters to distribute right then, before an answer comes back at you.

The fragility lives in the enters-the-battlefield trigger doing all the work. Removal that connects before that trigger resolves, like Stomped by the Foot held with priority, loses you the free activations entirely; Stomped pays nothing extra for the legendary tag. And whatever X you chose at cast is locked: there is no activated ability to feed mana into later, so the body you get is the body you paid for.

The math works because the common toughness map is shallow. Three-drops sit at 2/3 and 3/2 with 2/2s underneath. One counter turns most of your board into a trade-up; two on one attacker breaks combat outright. That is what makes this a first pick with no artifact payoffs in the pool: a scaling sink that asks for a board to spend on, not a deck built around it.

The ceiling gets greedy with Equipment. Bespoke Bō on a counter-stacked body closes in two swings. The floor, an X of two off four mana, holds serve until a fatter copy arrives. Distribute the counters first; Grounded for Life punishes a tapped-out swing into open white, so decide the attack second.

The math is the appeal: cast for X of six (eight mana, ) and you get six Mutagen tokens that, thanks to the legend's own cost reduction, crack for free to scatter six +1/+1 counters wherever they help. That makes this a +1/+1 counters payoff first and a token-and-sacrifice piece second. The natural homes are commanders that already want a wide board of small creatures and a counters subtheme to pump them. Ghave, Guru of Spores is the cleanest fit: every Mutagen token feeds his own counter loop, and the free distribution hands him a board the turn it lands. Pir, Imaginative Rascal paired with Toothy, Imaginary Friend doubles each Mutagen counter, so an eight-mana cast scatters twelve.

This is a Bracket 2-3 card. The sorcery-speed restriction on the tokens keeps it out of cEDH, where counter-distribution at this rate does not close games against fast combo, and it asks for more support than a precon ships with. As a new card the secondary price is unsettled, but the role is the mid-tier counters engine, not a curve-topper; you want a meaningful X, which puts it in the back half of the game.

The floor is real, though. At X of zero it is a 2/3 trampler for ; at X of one it can enter and immediately crack its token to become a 3/4 trampler for . Those are honest early plays, not dead draws.

Within the archetype it competes with Hangarback Walker as a counters-on-bodies anchor. Hangarback rebuys its tokens on death and fits any colors; Mutagen Man distributes counters proactively and tramples through the wreckage. In Ghave and Pir/Toothy builds, run both. Outside +1/+1 counter shells, the card is close to invisible.

A green X-spell payoff looking for an artifact-counters shell that Modern does not have. The card wants you to pour mana into a big X, scatter Mutagen tokens, and cash them for free counters, but no constructed deck is built to use a sorcery-speed counter engine as its plan. Legal, but yet to register in tracked tournament play, and there is no archetype asking for it. This lands in Commander before it finds a Modern home; cut from any sixty-card list.

The cost-reduction loop is the whole pitch: pour mana into X, get a Mutagen token for each point, then crack the batch for nothing because the legend zeroes out their activation cost. A cast for six is six counters waiting to land and a trampling body to carry the overflow once they do. The problem this season is timing. Building the engine eats a full turn at sorcery speed before it produces anything, and the aggressive decks defining the format will have spent that turn attacking. It registers as a fringe card so far, run in the handful of lists that try it as close to a full set rather than a flex slot, which tells you the pilots committing to it treat it as a centerpiece and not a splash. The gap is structural, not a question of raw strength: the payoff is spread across tokens where the format pays for single threats that demand an answer the turn they resolve.

A slower green counters deck could use the board-wide distribution, but nothing in the current pool has built one that holds up against the field.

Mutagen Man rotates with its parent block in fall 2027, the exact date pending Wizards' announcement. That leaves a long stretch of legality, and the question that decides its fate is whether a slower metagame arrives in that span to make the setup turn affordable. Until one does, or until a printing gives the Mutagen tokens a job beyond ferrying counters, it stays outside the format it was built for.

The X-spell slot in green midrange and counters builds, where you pour generic mana into a board's worth of tokens and a delayed pile of counters once the cost reduction makes them free to crack. The problem is the two-step ask: you build the board one turn, swing the next, and a Pioneer green deck would rather run a threat that does something the turn it lands. Hangarback Walker fills the same mana-sink role and leaves bodies behind when it dies. Legal, but it has yet to register in tracked tournament play this season. Budget green brews only, and the first cut when a real top end is in range.

An X-cost green creature in a format where Black Lotus makes three mana on turn zero and Ancestral Recall draws three for one. The Mutagen engine wants a big X to matter, which means pouring mana into a sorcery-speed counter distribution that does nothing the turn it lands. Vintage does not pay that tax, and there is no green +1/+1 counters deck here to pay it for. Legal, but yet to register in tracked tournament play. Noise.

An X-spell creature whose X buys Mutagen tokens rather than a body. The bar for a green threat here is Tarmogoyf at two mana, a turn-one 4/5 or 5/6 in the right graveyard, and there is no green deck in the format willing to trade that rate for on a 2/3. The double green is a real constraint on a manabase that wants fetches and duals, and the body does nothing the turn it lands beyond making a pile of artifact tokens. Those tokens can crack immediately, since they have no summoning sickness, but only at sorcery speed and only for a single +1/+1 counter each: a slow board-distribution engine, not a threat. A spell that wants an X of four or six to matter is paying the Force of Will tax, and pays it for an effect Legacy has no deck built to want.
