How this card plays

7 reviews

The two-permanent trigger is the whole pitch, and it asks for a creatures-and-lands grip rather than a spellslinger one. A 4/4 that arrives tapped and attacking, then drops a creature and a land from hand on combat damage, is a cheat-and-ramp engine bolted to a body green will happily attack with. The Sneak cost is the discipline: you trade an unblocked attacker for the trigger, so you want a deck that generates expendable attackers and holds fat permanents in hand.

Selvala, Heart of the Wilds is the cleanest home in green, since the deck already wants to untap on big creatures and Michelangelo turns a stranded hand of haymakers into a board state. Goreclaw, Terror of Qal Sisma wants this too: it builds wide on cheap stompy threats, which gives Sneak something to bounce, and the land drop smooths toward the next expensive creature. Both are Bracket 2-3 stompy and ramp shells, which is exactly where the card lives. It is too slow and too combat-dependent for cEDH, and precon decks rarely hold the grip of expensive permanents to make the trigger worth the trade-in.

This is a new-printing card and should settle in the $5-15 range, an archetype piece rather than a curve staple. The closest in-archetype comparison is a big-mana payoff like Elderscale Wurm: Michelangelo is worse as a standalone beater and better as an enabler, because the body matters less than what it puts down. Outside mono-green and Selvala-style ramp, the card is invisible. Voltron, spellslinger, and control commanders have no attacker to spare and no permanents in hand worth cheating in. This is a stompy-ramp engine, not a generalist.
