How this card plays

7 reviews

The token doubler that wants you to flood the board with small bodies, not curve into haymakers, with one sharp caveat: the creatures have to enter with power, because the life payment is fixed at printed power and zero life buys zero counters. That rules out the cheapest go-wide engines. Prossh, Skyraider of Kher makes 0/1 Kobolds; their power is zero, so Madame Null pays nothing and grants nothing. She wants tokens that arrive with a body, like the 1/1s and 2/2s that make up most aristocrats boards.

The cleaner reads are commanders whose tokens enter with at least one power and who treat life as a resource. K'rrik, Son of Yawgmoth shells run her because life is already the deck's currency, and converting the surplus into counters on a developing board fits the plan. Mr. House, President and CEO, who churns out 1/1 Robots and the occasional 3/3 Golem, is the other natural home; each Robot entering at one power costs a single life to push to a 2/2, and the Golems are already big enough to leave alone.

This is a Bracket 2-3 card. Too slow and too life-hungry for cEDH, too synergy-dependent to matter in a precon. The deathtouch is load-bearing: a 1/3 that trades up keeps the engine alive through the turn cycle where a vanilla three-drop gets run over.

As a board-development engine she sits below Cathars' Crusade, which counters the entire team on every enter and scales exponentially on a flood turn; Madame Null only ever pumps the single new creature, one body at a time, a linear effect against Crusade's geometric one. What she offers instead is the cheaper cost and a defensive body. In multiplayer, paying real life to build a board makes a well-timed wipe hurt you worse than the player who paid nothing. Sub-$5 archetype piece, invisible outside go-wide black.

Deathtouch Whenever another creature you control enters, you may pay life equal to its power. If you do, put that many +1/+1 counters on it.
