The original tribal lord, and the chassis every Merfolk anthem since has iterated on: a design that compresses two distinct effects onto a single two-mana body, a static +1/+1 buff and a conditional evasion grant, both restricted to the rest of the team. The islandwalk clause is the one that did the real work. It reads as a flavor tax (Merfolk live in the water, of course they swim past defenders), but mechanically it weaponizes the opponent's own manabase against them, turning every Island they play for their own purposes into a permission slip for the entire school. In an era when blue dominated and Islands were everywhere, that was no corner-case keyword; it was a near-unconditional unblockable rider stapled to a lord. The card established the shape Merrow Reejerey and every subsequent Merfolk lord would build on: cheap, double-pip for tribal commitment, anthem plus a synergy hook. What it lacked is the discipline later lords would add. Because it buffs "other Merfolk" without restriction, it pumps an opponent's school too, a symmetry that designs like Master of the Pearl Trident later closed with a "you control" clause. So the original is less a finished engine than a proof of concept: it shows the chassis works, then leaves the asymmetry and the redundancy for its successors to bolt on. It preserves a Magic where one basic land type could carry an entire archetype's evasion plan.
