Instant3 generic manaBlue mana

The plain-vanilla draw spell, priced one mana north of efficiency and built at instant speed. The interesting design fact here is the targeting clause: "target player draws two cards" rather than "you draw two cards." That single word makes the spell a tool you can point at an opponent, a piece of design DNA that links it to Howling Mine and the long lineage of symmetrical and group-draw effects that turn card advantage into a shared resource. Almost nobody fired it at an opponent, of course; the optionality was a flavor flourish that later cards would weaponize deliberately. What dates this card is the rate. Four mana for two cards at instant speed was a reasonable Standard staple in its era, when card advantage came slowly and Wizards still treated raw draw as a premium effect. Every refinement since (Divination dropping to three mana at sorcery speed, the whole modern push toward draw-with-upside) measures against this baseline: clean, honest, and exactly one mana too expensive to survive the next decade of power creep. The "target player" wording remains the most quietly forward-looking thing about it, a hint that draw spells could be aimed outward long before the group-hug archetype made that idea load-bearing.
