Hardened Scales

The replacement effect that turned counter-stacking from arithmetic into geometry. Every counter doubler before it multiplied: Doubling Season and its kin take what you place and double the total. This one adds a flat plus-one to each placement event, which sounds smaller until you chain it with cards that scatter counters in small, frequent installments. A single counter from a proliferate or a modular trigger becomes two; with two copies in play it becomes three, and the engine compounds across every individual placement rather than every turn. That distinction anchors an archetype the multipliers never could: it rewards width of triggers over size of payoffs, so a deck full of one-counter sources outperforms a deck built around a single big counter dump. The cost keeps it from being unconditional: at one mana it does nothing on an empty board, and it does nothing at all unless your other cards are already pointed at building up creatures. It is a pure enabler, an enchantment that converts a deckbuilding commitment into exponential returns and offers zero standalone value. The design opened a corner of green and artifact synergy that has been mined repeatedly since: the counter decks that break formats rarely run the multipliers, because adding one to each small placement scales harder than doubling a number that was never large to begin with.
