Grounded for Life

Functionally Seized from Slumber. Five mana for an unconditional kill is the overcosted fail state that kept the original off the default white pick list, and nothing in this set rescues that floor: the question is whether the discount mode shows up often enough to matter. In TMT it does, but narrowly. Sneak is the most-printed mechanic in the set by a wide margin, and the creatures arriving tapped through Sneak are exactly what you want to point this at for two mana. The catch is that white's natural homes here lean aggressive, and a patient two-mana answer that rewards you for letting the opponent attack first is a poor fit for the deck that wants to be the attacker.

That makes this an Orzhov card more than a white card. The grindy WB shell is happy to hold up two, trade for whatever swung, and grind from there; a Boros or mono-white curve deck would rather have almost any other common removal in the slot. Take it highly out of an Orzhov seat, around a mid pick with at least one wanted in every WB deck, and let it table from a Boros one.

Functionally Seize from Slumber. The discount clause is a real piece of design, and the identity read is right that two-mana hard removal is a rate white rarely gets. The gate is clean: the opponent taps, the window opens, you trade two mana for whatever just committed. The only question Commander asks is how often that window lines up with the creatures you actually need dead.

More often than the dismissive read would have it, because Commander is a format of attackers and tap-to-activate engines. The problem permanent frequently does have to tap: the commander that swings for value, the creature that crews or taps for its own ability, the attacker pointed at a planeswalker or another player. Each of those falls into the two-mana band, which means you are holding up instant-speed removal and answering threats on the opponent's tempo. It is not Swords to Plowshares or Path to Exile, which kill anything for a single mana regardless of board state, but it gives nothing back: no land, no life, no permanent for the opponent to rebuild around.

The fail state is the untapped engine that never has to commit, and there the card is a five-mana hard kill, fine but unexceptional next to Generous Gift or Anguished Unmaking. So it rewards the deck that sits behind open mana and punishes the table for attacking, a narrower brief than premium white removal but a genuinely cheaper one when the game cooperates. The reprint adds a copy to the pool and changes nothing else.

Functionally Seized from Slumber. Five mana is a non-starter for hard removal in Modern, where white already has Swords to Plowshares and Path to Exile at one mana with no setup. The tapped-creature discount is real, but it is the opponent's tempo decision to grant, and Modern rarely waits around long enough to make that gate matter when the premium one-mana exiles already exist and ask nothing.

Legal, and yet to register in tracked tournament play. The reprint changes nothing here: it adds a copy to a pool that already had no use for the effect, and the deck that wanted the discount-removal niche does not exist in this format.

The full five mana is a price you almost never want to pay for unconditional creature removal in this format, so the card lives or dies on how often the tapped discount comes online. The good news for white is that Standard still rewards attacking: aggressive midrange and the go-wide builds that want to commit a board both hand you the two-mana window by playing the game they want to play. Hold up the two mana, let them swing, and you have a tempo answer white is not usually allowed.

The shape of that answer matters more than the rate. It does nothing on an empty board and nothing against a deck content to sit back, which means it slots into the controlling white shells that can afford to wait rather than the aggressive ones that need removal on their own clock. Against a creature attacking into open mana, or one tapped for an ability, it is a clean two-for-one in tempo terms.

For now it is legal but has yet to register in tracked Standard play this season. That is the expected outcome for a conditional kill spell whose floor is overcosted: it needs a metagame that attacks into white, and the demand for that profile so far has gone elsewhere.

Functionally Seized from Slumber. The conditional discount is the whole card: five mana for a hard kill spell is white doing nothing special, but two mana to destroy a tapped creature is a rate Pioneer cares about, and the question is only whether a deck can reliably catch creatures tapped.

That condition is the problem in this format. Pioneer's best decks either attack on their own clock, where they would rather not leave the discount live, or sit back behind planeswalkers and mana you cannot punish at instant speed without your own setup. White already has cleaner answers at competitive cost: removal that does not ask the opponent to cooperate. So the card is legal and has yet to register in tracked tournament play this season, which tracks with the read on the original. Nothing about the printing changes that calculus; it adds a copy to the pool and not much else.

Functionally Seize the Soul. Nothing in this printing moves the math: five mana at full price, two when the target is tapped.

Pauper's question is whether conditional white removal at that ceiling earns a slot, and so far it has not registered in tracked tournament play. The format already has its cheap white answers, and most of them do not ask the opponent to cooperate. The discount is real, but it is gated on a tapped creature, which in practice means a board that has already committed to attacking, and the white decks that want clean removal would rather not be waiting on that window. The full-price fail state caps it hard: paying five for one creature is a non-starter in a format this fast. Until a control or midrange white shell appears that specifically wants a spell tuned to punish attackers, the two-mana mode reads better than it plays.

The trouble is that Vintage answers threats before they ever tap, and at instant speed for less. Swords to Plowshares, Fatal Push, and the format's free interaction all sit ahead of a card whose efficient mode requires the opponent to commit first, on a turn cycle white control in this format rarely has to grant.

It is legal and has not registered in tracked Vintage play this season, which tracks with the read: the punish-tempo angle that gave this card a real home in Limited and lower formats is the wrong axis for a format that wins before combat math matters.

Five mana for hard removal is a non-entry in Legacy, where white's best answers cost one and exile rather than destroy, but the tapped-creature discount is the whole conversation. Two mana to kill any creature that has committed to an attack or tapped for value is a rate that does compete, and indestructible aside, it answers the things Swords to Plowshares and Council's Judgment already cover at a lower floor when the window opens.

The problem is that the window is the opponent's to grant, and Legacy opponents tap into open white mana carefully. Against the fast combo and tempo decks that define the format, you are often paying full freight or holding a dead card while the game is decided on the stack. It is legal, it has not registered in tracked tournament play, and there is no obvious shell asking for a reactive five-drop whose discount the opponent can simply decline.
