Brainstorm
The card that defined what card selection means in blue, and the one every draw-smoother since has been priced against. The raw arithmetic looks like a wash: three cards drawn, two put back, net zero on the count. The power lives entirely in how you spend the second clause, because the two cards you return are your worst two, chosen with full knowledge of the three you just saw. That is the design trick, and it is subtle enough that the card has been chronically underrated by players counting cards instead of counting quality. The catch is that those two returned cards sit on your library, so without a way to clear them your next draws are spoken for (the dreaded "Brainstorm lock," where you draw back the exact cards you wanted gone). The effect only converts into real advantage when something shuffles them away: a fetchland crack erases the worst two and turns "look at three, keep one" into "dig three deeper." Cast it raw with nothing to follow and you have rearranged your draws without improving them. The instant speed is what makes the whole thing sing, letting you hold up the option and fire it during an upkeep, after a fetch, or in response to an opponent's spell once you know what you actually need. It encodes a principle Wizards has spent decades calibrating around: that smoothing what you draw, not how much, is the quietly broken lever in blue. Most successors were deliberately made worse.
