Wound Reflection

Enchantment5 generic manaBlack mana

The doubling effect that nobody talks about, because it doubles the wrong half of the equation: not the damage you deal, but the damage already dealt, resolved a second time at end of turn. The clean structural read is that it turns every point of life loss your opponent suffers into two, deferring the second tick to the end step where it cannot be answered with the usual lifegain reflexes a player keeps ready during combat. The wrinkle that makes it singular among black's life-drain effects is that it reads "the life they lost this turn," not the life you caused them to lose. Anything counts: their own fetch lands, their own painful filtering, a Phyrexian-mana payment, a shock aimed at their own face, all of it gets mirrored back at the end step. Most life-total payoffs in black want you to be the source; this one is agnostic about who pulled the trigger, which is what makes it a closer when the plan is to chip rather than to swing. It does not deal the killing blow itself so much as guarantee that any blow already landed lands twice, and the six-mana cost reflects that it is meant to close, not to open: by the time it resolves onto the battlefield, the math is already running against the table.
