Vintara Snapper

Creature — TurtleGreen manaGreen mana

Prophecy built its whole green identity around a strange inversion: punish the player who keeps mana open. The shroud here only switches on when you control no untapped lands, which means the protection rewards tapping out, the exact opposite of the cautious, mana-up posture every other set asks of you. It is a defensive ability bolted to an aggressive incentive, and the friction is the point. Want this creature untargetable through your opponent's removal? Then commit your mana, spend it, leave nothing in reserve, and accept the vulnerability that comes with an empty board state on the other player's turn. The set leaned hard on this "tapland matters" theme (Rhystic effects that cost more if you have untapped lands, creatures that grew when your lands were spent), and this Turtle is one of its cleaner expressions: the shroud is real, but it costs you the ability to react. A 2/2 body for two green mana was never the draw; the draw was the puzzle of timing your protection against your own tempo. The mechanic never caught on, and the broader Prophecy experiment of taxing open mana was quietly abandoned, but the design remains a genuine curiosity: a self-protecting creature whose protection is contingent on you playing into your opponent's window rather than guarding against it.
