The trick here is that wither turns a modest sweeper into a payoff engine. That entry trigger only pings each opposing creature for a single point of damage, which by itself kills almost nothing worth killing. But wither routes that damage as a -1/-1 counter rather than marked damage, so every creature on the other side that survives the ping now carries a counter, and the death trigger is watching. The card does not care whether you finished those creatures off in combat, with a burn spell, or with another pass of removal; once a counter is on a body, its eventual death mints a tapped Treasure. That reframes the whole thing from a five-mana 5/5 that clears out tokens into a repeatable ramp piece disguised as a beater, one that rewards attrition and go-wide punishment rather than a single big swing. The counter mechanic is doing the load-bearing work: marked damage clears at end of turn, but a -1/-1 counter is permanent, so a creature the trigger merely dented earlier is still a Treasure waiting to happen several turns later. It answers a persistent design puzzle for the color: how to hand red a slow, grinding value engine without asking it to stop being aggressive. Wither is the hinge that lets it do both, converting the color's instinct to point damage at everything into a stream of ramp it never had to earn twice.
