The economics are everything: you spend one creature to buy back two, a conversion rate that makes this a reanimation engine rather than a plain return-from-graveyard spell. The card it sacrifices wants to be cheap and ideally already spent; the two it returns want to be expensive, evasive, or stuffed with enter-the-battlefield value. That ratio is what makes the loop self-perpetuating: feed it a creature whose death matters, return two that refill the yard, and prime the engine before you fire it. The catch is in the word "tapped": the returned creatures cannot attack or block the turn they land and cannot immediately tap for activated abilities, so the doubled payoff arrives a full turn behind the bodies. That delay, paired with the sacrifice cost, is what pays for getting two threats out of one card. Black reanimation has historically split between the single-target premium (Reanimate, Animate Dead) and broad mass returns; this occupies a third lane, a sorcery that turns one investment into two and rewards a graveyard already stocked rather than a lone fattie pitched and pulled. Two levers do the balancing work: the tap clause that stalls the payoff and the body you must surrender as it resolves. Decades of graveyard decks have built around exactly that exchange, treating the sacrifice not as a cost to be minimized but as a second resource to be sequenced.
