Vashta Nerada
Shadow is one of Tempest's most infamous evasion mechanics: a keyword so absolute that creatures with it exist in a private combat war where nothing without shadow can block or be blocked. Almost no creatures have ever carried it, which is exactly what makes this design work. A shadow creature is effectively unblockable in every real game, so the only tax on the mechanic is a body that starts small and dies to a stiff breeze. This one removes the second half of that bargain. Indestructible means it cannot be traded away, chumped into oblivion, or swept by the board wipes that shadow bodies have always feared, and the morbid trigger turns the game's attrition against the opponent: any turn a creature dies (yours, theirs, in combat, to removal) grows an attacker they can almost never legally interact with. The three abilities compound into something meaner than the 1/1 printed on it. It arrives as an untouchable evader that only gets bigger the longer bodies keep hitting graveyards, and its near-unblockability means those +1/+1 counters translate almost directly into damage that lands. The design lesson is in what balances it: shadow was always a mechanic that traded fragility for evasion, and by stripping the fragility while keeping the evasion, this card asks the format to answer a clock it can almost never block or destroy.
