You get the evasive beater immediately and you pay for it immediately, in the resource black is most comfortable spending. The life loss is symmetrical with the rest of the color's bargaining: this is the same accounting logic that makes black's premium creatures and tutors price themselves in life rather than mana. What dates the card is not the cost but the bluntness; later black fliers in this rate band tend to attach the drawback to a trigger you can play around or a counter that decays, where this one simply hands you the bill and trusts you to decide whether four life is worth a clock in the air.
