The joke lands as design first, meme second: a black devotion payoff whose reward is a swarm of green Squirrels, a color pairing that makes no strategic sense until you notice it doesn't have to. What matters is the counting mechanism. Devotion to black tallies every black pip on your permanents, not the creatures themselves, so the token count scales with how committed your board already is to mono-black. Drop this into a deck stuffed with double-pipped permanents and the enters trigger cashes out a stack of bodies proportional to a commitment you were making anyway. There lies the appeal: it rewards board presence you'd have built regardless, then converts it into wide fodder in a single trigger, all front-loaded on entry with no upkeep tax or repeatable engine to babysit. The 3/3 is beside the point; the payload is the Squirrel count. Most devotion payoffs spend the tally on something impermanent: Gray Merchant of Asphodel drains for it once and then it's spent, the various gods blink in and out of creaturehood as your pip count fluctuates. This one instead converts the same reading into permanents that outlive it, a quietly different axis for the mechanic to sit on: the Squirrels are still swinging after the Hermit dies. A one-shot conversion of pips into fodder, at six mana with a middling frame, is a fair bargain for a token generator built to reward the deck you'd already assembled.
