Turbulent Wilderness

Land — Forest Island

Most conditional taplands read your own board: fetchable typing, a life payment, a card revealed from hand, a count of your own lands. This one ignores your side entirely and counts your opponents' lands instead, staying tapped until the table has piled up eight or more. That inversion drives a deliberately backward reward curve. In the opening turns, when an extra untapped source would actually buy you tempo, it plods in tapped like the plainest Guildgate. It only enters untapped once your opponents have piled up eight or more lands, which is precisely when a spare point of tempo is least useful. The enters-tapped default is doing the familiar work that keeps a free two-color source honest, but the condition that lifts the tax points outward, at your opponents, rather than at your own development. That makes it a fixture built for the long, sprawling games where board states routinely balloon past eight lands, and the untapped mode reads as a genuine payout rather than a rounding error. As Simic fixing it carries the right basic types, so it folds cleanly into the fetch and ramp packages green and blue already lean on. Where shock lands and pain lands front-load their cost, this one defers it, waiting to read the room and paying out only in games that have actually gone the distance.
