Triskaidekaphobia

A win condition built entirely out of a number, which makes it the rarest kind of alternate-win design in Magic: there is no threshold to assemble, no counter to accumulate, only two life totals to herd onto a single value. Read the order of operations, because it is the entire trap: on both modes, players at exactly 13 lose the game first, and only after that does everyone gain or lose the point. The life swing never rescues a player already sitting on thirteen; by the time the gain or loss resolves, that player is gone. What the swing does is set up the next upkeep, nudging totals toward or away from the kill zone. The drain mode walks a stalled opponent at 14 down to 13, priming them to die on your following upkeep; the gain mode pushes a table at 12 up to exactly 13, arming the same trap from the other direction, while also lifting your own total clear of danger. The reward goes to a deck that can meter damage and life gain to the single point, which makes this less a finisher than a vise you tighten by increments, then spring on your own turn. The flavor and the function are welded together: the name is the superstition, and the card literally makes the number lethal, so every life-total readout on the table turns into a threat assessment. A puzzle box for players who would rather win by arithmetic than by combat.
