Torch the Witness

SorceryX generic manaRed mana

Overkill as a resource engine. Most X-damage removal treats leftover damage as waste: you pay for a number, kill the creature, and any surplus evaporates the moment the target hits the graveyard. This design flips that leak into a payoff by rewarding you for aiming high. Point it at a two-toughness creature with X set to two and the spell deals four damage, double what you needed to kill it, and that surplus converts into a Clue. The structural cleverness is that the doubling front-loads the overkill: because damage scales at twice X, even a single point of extra investment past lethal buys the excess trigger, so the real choice is whether to weigh the tempo cost of overpaying against the card advantage of the Clue. It punishes precise, mana-efficient removal and pays out sloppy, generous removal, an inversion of the usual instinct to spend exactly enough. That tension (kill cheaply now versus kill wastefully for a card later) is the entire decision, and it turns a burn spell's mana curve into a genuine question rather than a rate check. The sorcery speed keeps the overpay honest, denying the instant-speed combat blowout that would make timing the excess trivial, so the surplus damage has to be committed on your own turn against a known board.
