Topography Tracker
Explore is a mechanic that quietly bundles two outcomes into one trigger: reveal a land and stock your hand, or reveal a nonland and leave behind a permanent +1/+1 counter. Doubling that trigger is where this Merfolk earns its keep. The replacement clause is a static rule, not a one-shot; while it holds the battlefield, every explore your creatures generate resolves twice, so a single trigger becomes two cards, two counters, or a mix of both. That turns marginal explore sources into real card advantage and marginal bodies into genuine threats, since every counter now lands in pairs. The Map token it brings along demonstrates its own value, an on-demand explore you can crack when you need to feed the doubler rather than wait on it. What makes the design interesting is how it converts a mechanic built for incremental, small-ball upside into an engine: explore was always meant to smooth draws and grow creatures a little at a time, and this reframes that patience as a rate. The creature itself is beside the point; the card is a rules-altering anchor whose payoff scales with how many explore triggers a deck can manufacture. Build around it and every scout, every ETB explorer, and every Map becomes a two-for-one.
