The Twelfth Doctor

Legendary Creature — Time Lord Doctor3 generic manaBlue manaRed mana

Demonstrate was a keyword built around a peculiar social contract: to copy your own spell, you had to hand a copy to an opponent too. That symmetry made it a hard sell in a vacuum, because the spells you most want to double are exactly the ones you would hate to gift. This design threads the needle by narrowing the grant to the first spell you cast each turn from a zone other than your hand: flashback casts, adventures, foretold cards, impulse-drawn spells fired off out of exile. Restricting demonstrate to those zones flips it from a liability into a payoff for building around re-buys and recursion, where the spells you copy tend to be ones an opponent copying along cannot easily punish you with. The second ability closes the loop and gives the whole engine a clock: every copy you make, whether from demonstrate or any other source, grows this 4/4 by one, so a deck already leaning on spell-copy effects finds a body that quietly climbs toward lethal while it does its normal work. The token clause matters too, since a copied permanent spell arrives as a token rather than a stack copy that fizzles, meaning the grant reaches past instants and sorceries into creatures and artifacts replayed from the yard or from exile. It is a build-around that demands a specific kind of deck, then pays that deck in incremental board growth rather than one explosive turn.

Rules text

The first spell you cast from anywhere other than your hand each turn has demonstrate. (When you cast that spell, you may copy it. If you do, choose an opponent to also copy it. A copy of a permanent spell becomes a token.) Whenever you copy a spell, put a +1/+1 counter on The Twelfth Doctor.
