Green rarely gets a payoff that keys off casting noncreature spells; that reward has almost always lived in blue and red, where spell density is the whole point. Here the combat-trigger asks for at least one noncreature spell per turn and hands back four +1/+1 counters, quietly building a spells-matter shell around a color that usually just wants to cast creatures. That mismatch is the design's actual hook: it drags spellslinger tempo into a trample beater that gets bigger the more you deviate from green's usual creature-first plan. The second ability is where the numbers stop being reasonable. Committing a four-color payment on the attack (red, green, white, and blue, notably leaving black out entirely) doubles every kind of counter on any number of your permanents, so the four you banked before combat become eight, then sixteen across successive turns, and the doubling is not restricted to The Thing itself: charge counters on artifacts, loyalty on planeswalkers, any counter you have been stacking scales at once, and doubled loyalty in turn fuels bigger activations. The counter-doubling loop it supports (four on, then doubled) is the sort of exponential math that only ever appears on a card built to overwhelm a multiplayer board rather than trade evenly. What holds it together is the cost curve of the abilities themselves: the free trigger demands a noncreature spell you might not always want to cast, and the payoff demands four colors of mana held open through your attack step. It is a green creature that behaves like a four-color engine, and it prices that ambition accordingly.
