The Irencrag
A colorless rock that pays for itself as a two-mana ramp piece, then holds a second life in reserve: the transformation is the whole design. Most mana artifacts in this cost bracket earn their keep by fixing or accelerating and then sitting inert once the mana matters less. This one gives you an off-ramp. Once your board tilts toward legendary creatures and you have mana to spare, a single legendary enters and the rock can shed everything to become a +3/+3 equipment with equip , a permanent stat boost stapled to whatever body needs to close. That conversion is one-directional and irreversible, which is the honest tax on the flexibility: you trade a reusable mana source for a combat upgrade the moment you commit, and there is no equipping-and-unequipping the ramp back. The trigger being a "may" keeps it from firing when you would rather keep the mana, so the decision sits with you rather than the board state. Structurally it is a legend-count payoff dressed as a mana source, rewarding a deck already leaning on legendary creatures without demanding you build around it before it has done its early job. The flavor pun does real work too: a legendary crag that hardens into the sword Everflame the moment the right heroes gather, mana turning to steel the way a legend turns to legacy.
