The Frightful Four

A punishment engine wearing a beater's body. Black has taxed noncreature spells before, but usually through symmetric drains or one-shot triggers; this one narrows the tax to the opponent's first noncreature cast per turn and scales it directly to that spell's mana value. The restriction pays for the effect: it does not punish the cheap interaction, the one-mana removal or the two-mana counter, so hard it locks the game, but it makes every ramp rock, every board wipe, every expensive planeswalker cost life to deploy. Cast a six-drop sorcery and pay six life for the privilege. Against a control or ramp shell that wants to sculpt with sorcery-speed haymakers, the arithmetic gets ugly fast; against a creature-heavy deck it does comparatively little, a deliberate seam that lets black squeeze exactly the strategies its noncreature density betrays. Menace and a 4/4 frame mean it is not just a static tax sitting on the table: it applies clock pressure while the ability grinds, so the opponent is choosing between casting spells into the drain or holding them and dying to the body. The card's whole leverage is timing pressure: it makes the opponent's turn a decision about when to eat the tax rather than whether, and the first-spell-per-turn clause turns the effect into attrition rather than a hard lockout. The opponent still gets to develop; they just pay a running tab for the privilege.
