Spore counters are the slowest value engine green ever wired into a creature, and this Fungus leans all the way into that patience. A counter lands every one of your upkeeps, but nothing happens automatically: you spend three of them, by your own choice, to activate the line that hatches a single 1/1 Saproling. Three turns to your first token, and even then the payoff is the humblest body around. The design bargain is clean: time for value, with no further mana required once the creature has resolved. The third ability is what closes the loop. Older Fungus designs simply spat out Saprolings with nowhere to send them; the sacrifice outlet here converts accumulated chaff into a recurring combat trick, feeding a token to pump any creature +1/+1 until end of turn. The mushrooms you grind out have somewhere to go: a surprise point of toughness, a lethal point of power at instant speed, all paid for in tokens rather than mana. Note the order of operations the design enforces. You cannot shortcut the stockpile straight into stats; spore counters only ever buy tokens, and only tokens feed the pump. The machine asks for one thing above all: durability. Keep an unassuming 2/2 alive across upkeeps and it pays a small dividend forever, rewarding the player willing to let it sit and accrue rather than demand value the turn it lands.
