Talisman of Progress
This cycle of two-mana rocks splits the difference between the Signets that came later and the painlands that came before: tap for colorless at no cost, or take a point of damage to produce one of two specific colors. That little self-inflicted ping is the whole balancing act, and the choice of damage over a life payment is deliberate. Damage can be prevented or redirected, which means the colored mode interacts with effects that paying life never would, and it keeps the acceleration honest by making the colored output a small recurring cost rather than a freebie. The Azorius member fixes for the colors of control: the counterspell-and-wrath end of the wheel, where holding up interaction across the opponent's turn is the plan. The colorless mode is no consolation here, since white and blue interaction tends to be color-intensive: Counterspell wants two blue, Swords to Plowshares wants white, and a generic mana from this rock pays for none of it. The colored mode, ping and all, is the one doing the real fixing. The design reads as a counterpoint to the Signets, with their enter-and-filter shape; this rock asks nothing on entry and demands no input mana to convert, charging in damage over the long game instead. That trade has kept both cycles in circulation rather than letting one obsolete the other, and it is why this remains a default two-mana fixer wherever Azorius wants to accelerate into expensive spells without bending the curve.
