Talisman of Dominance
The Dimir entry in the Talisman cycle that gave artifact ramp of its era a defining wrinkle: acceleration on turn two, but the colored taps come with a cost. The first ability fixes nothing and asks for nothing, leaving you a colorless source whenever the life total matters more than the color. The second pays you blue or black at the price of a point off your own total, a self-inflicted nudge that prices the convenience honestly. The natural comparison is a Signet, which fixes two colors and filters mana without ever pinging you, but demands a mana to activate it; the Talisman taps for its colored mana on its own, charging the difference in life rather than in mana. That math is trivial across most of a game and quietly real in the games where it is not, against aggression or your own pain-heavy manabase, where the colorless mode becomes the point of the card rather than a fallback. As a structural piece it does the work artifact ramp has always done in colors that lack green's land-fetching: it lets a controlling Dimir deck reach its expensive answers ahead of curve without warping the spell count, and it does so at a rarity and cost low enough that losing it to artifact removal is a shrug rather than a tempo disaster.
