How this card plays

7 reviews

Instant-speed removal that hits artifacts or creatures has always been the connective tissue of black-green Commander decks, and the Food rider is what decides whether this is a Putrefy replacement or a Putrefy-plus in a given list. The split is real: against a three-drop dork or a Sol Ring, you get the kill and a Food; against a resolved Blightsteel Colossus or a six-mana bomb, you are paying three mana for clean removal with no upside. Most of what you point removal at sits under the four mana value line, so the Food triggers more often than the asymmetry suggests.

The Food is self-contained value (it sacrifices itself for three life), so even a deck with no other payoff gets a small life buffer out of the kill. But the card earns its slot in commanders that turn the token into fuel. Korvold, Fae-Cursed King wants the Food as a sacrifice trigger and treats the removal as incidental upside; Slimefoot and Squee runs it for the same reason, converting the token into reach. In those shells the Food is a resource, not a footnote, and the removal becomes the bonus.

Bracket 2-3. The effect is too slow and too fair for cEDH, where Golgari removal slots go to Assassin's Trophy or Abrupt Decay, and it overdelivers for precon-level Bracket 1 where Putrefy-rate removal is already the ceiling. In the $5-15 range expected of a recent printing, it competes directly with Putrefy itself: take Tainted Treats in the Food-and-sacrifice decks where the token is live, take Putrefy when you are mostly aiming at the top end where the rider stays off. The Food is the whole argument, and it argues loudest in decks that already eat artifacts.
