Synthesizer Labship
A 4/4 for a single blue mana that cannot attack or block: that is the ledger this card opens with, and everything else is the repayment schedule. The body is priced in board presence rather than mana, so the front face reads like a lie until you have tapped nine power worth of your own creatures onto it. Everything gates off the charge total. At two counters the ship becomes a combat-phase animator, turning one of your other artifacts into a temporary 2/2 flier at the beginning of combat on your turn: mana rocks and idle equipment convert into evasive attackers. Because that trigger keys off your combat step, it is purely an offensive lever, never a way to conjure a surprise blocker on the opponent's swing. At nine, the ship becomes an artifact creature and flies as a vigilant threat that attacks and defends on the same turn. The design logic inverts the usual cheap-creature bargain: instead of pricing the payoff in mana, it prices activation in the availability of creatures you already control, and stationing is sorcery-speed and permanent, so each investment is a commitment rather than a flash of value. The interim animator is what keeps the card employed during the climb, since the deck accumulating counters would otherwise spend several turns doing nothing visible. It is a builder's engine wearing a one-drop's clothes, and the distance between what it costs and when it works is the entire shape of the card.
