How this card plays

7 reviews

The blurb's point is the right starting place: the trigger keys off any permanent leaving the battlefield, not off your own sacrifice outlets. That detachment is what makes Super Shredder more than an aristocrats card. In a four-player game, permanents leave the battlefield constantly without your help: opponents crack fetchlands, trade creatures, blow up each other's rocks, mill themselves, let auras fall off. The Shredder grows on all of it. So the honest read is broader than a sacrifice-engine recipient and narrower than "any black deck."

The commanders that want it most are the ones already churning their own board. Korvold, Fae-Cursed King runs it as collateral growth: every treasure and token cracked feeds both Korvold and the Shredder, and the menace body turns into a clock between engine turns. Yawgmoth, Thran Physician treats it as a recipient for every creature he pays away and every blocker that dies to his pinging. But it also quietly earns a slot in grindier removal-heavy decks like Toxrill, the Corrosive, where opposing boards are being whittled down on every turn and the Shredder banks each death.

On the casual-but-built power level (post-precon decks that play optimized singles without cEDH staples), this is where it lives. It does nothing in cEDH, where a 1/1 that needs the game to grind is the opposite of the plan, and it does little in straight precons that don't churn permanents.

Where it competes with Blood Artist or Zulaport Cutthroat for an aristocrats slot, it loses on payoff: those drain, this only grows. Its real argument is being a second axis, a cheap evasive threat in decks whose other payoffs don't pressure life totals. Sub-$5, and budget-included wherever a grindy black deck wants a clock.
