The lock applies to everyone at the table, including the player who deployed it, which means the asymmetry has to be built into the deck rather than handed over by the card. Each untap step forces a choice: artifact, creature, or land, untap only that type. A deck committed to a single axis (a land-light artifact shell, a creature-light prison build) barely feels the squeeze, while an opponent trying to operate across all three permanent types loses something every turn. What it weaponizes is the untap step itself, a phase players almost never treat as contestable, turning it into a recurring tax on board diversity. The untapped clause is the pressure valve: leave it standing and the lock holds for everyone, tap it down and play returns to normal. The card has no way to tap itself, so the off-switch has to be imported from elsewhere (Clock of Omens being the classic enabler), making that external piece a deliberate part of the build rather than a bonus. This is parasitic in the precise sense: it is dead weight in a balanced deck and only rewards a builder who has already decided which permanent type they can afford to leave dormant. The lineage runs through early artifact-based stax pieces that punish broad development without outright banning it. Storage Matrix does not stop anyone from playing creatures and lands and artifacts; it just makes you pick one to keep alive each turn, which for most decks is a slow strangulation dressed as a free choice.
