Sphinx of the Steel Wind
Five keywords stacked on one body, and the colors of those keywords are no accident. Flying, first strike, vigilance, and lifelink turn every combat into a one-sided exchange where this attacks, blocks, and gains life all at once; protection from red and from green then walls off the two colors most likely to burn it down or out-muscle it. Red's removal cannot target it, green's fatties cannot connect through it, and in the fair fights it is built to win, the 6/6 first-striking lifelinker simply does not lose. What it cannot do is dodge a sweeper that destroys or exiles outright: it has no indestructible, no protection from white or black, so an unconditional board wipe answers it the way it answers anything. The cost is the tax for everything else: eight mana spread across three colors, the kind of investment that only makes sense in a deck already bending toward heavy fixing or cheating costs. That last clause is where the card has always lived. Cast fair, it is a fortress that wins the combats it should; brought in early through reanimation or artifact-ramp shortcuts, it is a payoff that arrives well ahead of its mana value and threatens to swing the game outright. The Esper identity (white for the keyword suite, blue and black for the value and fixing to support it) marks it as a control finisher first, a curve-topper second. A wall and a clock in one shell, the reason it reads as overcosted at face value and undercosted the moment you stop paying full price.
