Instant1 generic manaBlue mana

Untapping up to two lands is the trick that turns a clean tempo bounce into something close to free. Refunding the mana spent makes this a zero-cost reset on the board: pick up an attacker, redraw the same two mana, and pass with your hand intact. That parity between cost and refund is the engine that built combo decks around it. Bounce an enters-the-battlefield creature on your own side to reuse it, fizzle a removal spell, or save a blocker mid-combat without falling behind on tempo, since the lands come right back. The discipline the design leans on is timing rather than cost: it cannot untap more than two lands, so the refund tops out, and the bounce is still just a bounce, sending a creature back to hand rather than dealing with it permanently. That ceiling is why it never crossed into pure abuse on its own; it asks for a payoff to chain into, not a payoff in itself. The free-spell lineage runs through Cloud of Faeries and the other Urza-block enablers that priced their mana refund into broken loops, and this sits in the cleaner, instant-speed corner of that family: an effect that does real work while pretending to cost nothing.
