Skyshroud Falcon

Creature — Bird1 generic manaWhite mana

A 1/1 flier with vigilance for two mana reads as a rounding error now, but the pairing of flying and vigilance on a small white body carries a specific design logic: vigilance turns an evasive attacker into a free chump-blocker insurance policy, letting it poke in the air every turn while still staying home to stop a ground threat. That is the entire pitch, and on a 1/1 the math rarely justifies the deck slot, which is why white kept pushing the same two-keyword combination onto progressively bigger bodies in later years. What this represents is the early, undersized version of an evergreen white template: the small flier that never has to choose between offense and defense. The keywords do real work; the stat line does not pay them off. It is a clean snapshot of how steeply early Magic priced evasion, when two mana bought you a single point of flying power and the second keyword still felt like a bonus. Later printings would hand out the identical flying-plus-vigilance package on a 1/1 for one mana, which is the truer measure of how far the rate has compressed: this was the expensive version, designed for an era when a two-mana 1/1 with two keywords could still earn a card.
