Shatter the Sky

Sorcery2 generic manaWhite manaWhite mana

Wrath of God long ago fixed the four-mana white board wipe at a set price: destroy everything, no strings. Every sweeper since has bargained against that baseline by attaching a rider, and this one lets its symmetric drawback go silent exactly where a control deck needs it to. The card draw resolves as part of the spell itself, before the destruction: each player controlling a creature of power 4 or greater draws, then the board clears. The design's cleverness is that the symmetry in the wording is not the symmetry in practice. Aggressive decks flood with one-drops and two-drops that never reach power 4, so against a wide board of small threats this resolves as a strict, riderless wrath with no card changing hands. It is only the committed midrange haymaker, the lone fat body you most want dead, that turns on the drawback and hands its controller a fresh card while giving you nothing to match. That is the concession the design asks for, not a wash: the payment scales with exactly the board states a control deck is content to see cleared and stays quiet against the ones it fears most. Cast into a swarm of tokens and mana dorks, it reads as free; cast into a single large threat, you pay a card and take the trade anyway. The self-selecting drawback is what separates it from a flat symmetrical sweep.
