Shard Phoenix

A board sweeper stapled to a recurring threat, and the whole design hinges on the bird never staying dead. The sacrifice ability is asymmetric by construction: it deals 2 damage to each creature without flying, clearing a board of grounded weenies while sparing every flier on the table. The catch is that the Phoenix pays for the sweep with its own life. Sacrifice is the cost, so the bird is in the graveyard before the damage resolves; it does not survey the wreckage, it joins it. That is where the real engine lives. The triple-red return clause, gated to your own upkeep, buys the card back to your hand to be recast for , turning a one-shot sweeper into a renewable one: blow up the ground, recur on a later upkeep, replay the body, sacrifice it again once the board refills. The upkeep restriction is what keeps the loop slow and fair. You cannot flash it back in response to a swing or chain the cycle inside a turn; you pay the tax once per cycle and wait, and because the recast creature has no haste, the cycle costs a full turn of tempo before the Phoenix threatens anything in the air again. The design is an early attempt to make a creature function as a renewable spell rather than a stat line, the recursion clause doing the work that buyback or flashback would later do on an instant or sorcery. The triple-red gate locks it into decks committed to the color, the price of an effect that, left unanswered, simply never goes away.
