Shadowy Backstreet

Land — Plains Swamp

The dual-typed tapland is one of the oldest fixing chassis in the game, the enters-tapped clause paying for a manabase that treats two colors as one. What this line of design has learned to do is bolt a small return onto the tempo you already surrendered: since the land is coming in tapped regardless, the turn you lose is a turn you can spend doing something else. Here that something is surveil 1, a graveyard-and-library selection trigger that fires once on entry. The value is deliberately modest, a single look at the top card with the option to bin it, because the fixing is the product and the surveil is the rebate. That framing matters for who wants it: this is a Plains Swamp built for decks that turn their own graveyard into fuel, where filtering a dead draw into the yard or setting up a delve or recursion payoff is worth more than the raw untapped mana. Strip the trigger away and it is an ordinary Orzhov tapland; the surveil is what makes the enters-tapped cost feel less like a tax and more like a transaction.
