Serra Angel

Creature — Angel3 generic manaWhite manaWhite mana

The reference point for what a five-mana creature was allowed to be. For most of the game's first decade, this was the ceiling: a flying, vigilant 4/4 that attacked and blocked in the same turn, and the card every fatty in white got measured against. The combination is the design idea. Flying made the body a clock that grounded creatures could not answer; vigilance made the same body a wall the opponent's flier could not get around. Putting both on one card collapsed the offense/defense tradeoff that the rest of the creature roster was built around, and the rate held its weight for years despite being, by modern standards, expensive for the stat line. Wizards spent the next two decades printing variations that pushed individual axes (Baneslayer Angel added lifelink and protection; Restoration Angel cut the cost and added a blink trigger; Lyra Dawnbringer added anthem and lifelink) while treating the original two-keyword chassis as the baseline they were iterating on. The card is no longer the ceiling; it is the floor that every white five-drop is now expected to clear. That shift, from aspirational to assumed, is itself one of the clearest illustrations of how creature design has moved across the game's history.
